Umrah from India: a complete step-by-step guide for first-time pilgrims

Everything an Indian pilgrim needs from the first enquiry to the return flight — documents, vaccination, ihram, the rites in order, and what a good group actually does for you.

Who this guide is for

If you have decided to perform Umrah and you are starting from India, this page is written for you. It follows the journey in the order it actually happens: the decisions first, then the paperwork, then the travel, then the rites themselves. Nothing here replaces the guidance of a scholar on matters of fiqh — it is the practical layer around it.

Before you book: five decisions

Almost every question a first-time pilgrim asks comes down to five decisions. Settle these and the rest becomes simple.

1. When. The season shapes the price, the crowds and the weather more than anything else.
2. How long. Most Umrah programmes split the nights between Makkah and Madinah. More nights in Makkah means more time at the Haram; more nights in Madinah means a calmer, slower second half.
3. How close to the Haram. This is the single biggest cost driver and the single biggest comfort factor, especially for elderly parents.
4. Which room type. Quad, triple, double or single. A quad room shared with family is the most economical; a double is the most comfortable.
5. With a group or independently. A group gives you an imam, a fixed programme, transport and someone to call. Independent travel gives you flexibility and nothing else.

Documents and vaccination

The documents an Indian pilgrim needs are short but unforgiving:

• A passport with sufficient remaining validity — check the exact requirement in force for your dates before you book anything.
• Recent photographs to the specification your agency gives you.
• The vaccination certificate required of pilgrims entering Saudi Arabia. Requirements are set by the Saudi Ministry of Health and are reviewed regularly, so confirm the current list before you go to a clinic.
• Travel insurance, where it is required or advisable for your group.

Requirements for Umrah change from season to season. We confirm the current list with every pilgrim in writing before any payment is taken, and we would rather tell you something has changed than let you discover it at the airport.

Choosing your departure city

You do not have to fly from Delhi. We build departures from more than thirty Indian cities, and the right one is usually a balance of three things: the total fare, the number of stops, and how far you and your family have to travel to reach the airport before an international flight.

For a family with elderly members, one extra stop can matter more than a difference in fare. Tell us who is travelling and we will tell you honestly which routing we would put our own parents on.

Entering ihram

Ihram is a state, not only a garment. You enter it at or before the miqat that applies to your route, with the intention and the talbiyah. For pilgrims flying into Jeddah, the announcement is normally made on board before the miqat is crossed — but do not rely on it. Change and make your intention in good time. Our group leaders brief every group on the ground rules before departure so nobody is guessing at thirty thousand feet.

The prohibitions of ihram — on perfume, cutting hair and nails, and the rest — begin at that moment. Learn them before you travel rather than reading them on your phone in the aircraft.

The rites of Umrah, in order

1. Ihram — intention and talbiyah at the miqat.
2. Tawaf — seven circuits of the Ka'bah, beginning and ending at the Hajar al-Aswad.
3. Two rak'ah after tawaf, near the Maqam Ibrahim where possible.
4. Sa'i — seven trips between Safa and Marwah.
5. Halq or taqsir — shaving or shortening the hair, which releases you from ihram.

Written like that it is five lines. In practice, in a crowded Haram, with elderly parents and children, it is where a group leader earns their place. Ours walk the group through it rather than pointing at a door.

Madinah and Ziyarat

Madinah is the quieter half of the journey and, for many pilgrims, the part they remember longest. The programme normally includes prayer at Al-Masjid An-Nabawi and guided Ziyarat to the sites connected to the life of the Prophet ﷺ and the early community. Access to individual sites is decided by the Saudi authorities and can change at short notice; your guide will tell you what is open during your stay.

What a group leader is for

A good group leader is not a tour guide with a flag. Before departure they run the briefing that answers the questions you did not know to ask. On the ground they handle the hotel, the transport, the timing, and the person who is unwell at two in the morning. In the Haram they keep the group together and teach as they go.

Ask any agency you speak to who exactly will be travelling with your group and what their experience is. A straight answer tells you a great deal.

Common first-timer mistakes

• Booking on price alone. Two packages with the same number can be very different journeys. We break the cost down here.
• Leaving the passport check to the end. Validity problems are the most common reason dates are lost.
• Over-packing. The Haram is a walking city. Our packing list is deliberately short.
• Not planning around the elderly. Distance to the Haram, wheelchair access and the number of flight stops matter far more than the hotel's star rating.
