What to pack for Umrah: a practical list for Indian families

A packing list written for the way Indian families actually travel — including the things people forget, what not to carry, and what your Hisar Umrah kit already covers.

Start with the bag itself

The Haram is a walking city and hotel rooms are not large. One checked bag per adult and one small shoulder bag you can carry into the Haram is the right shape for this journey. A hard trolley case that you cannot lift onto a bus is a mistake you will feel every day.

Label every bag inside and outside. In a group of forty, identical black suitcases are not a theory.

Ihram and clothing

• Two sets of ihram for men — one being worn, one clean and dry.
• An ihram belt with a pocket.
• Comfortable, loose, modest clothing for outside ihram. Light cotton, not synthetic.
• A light jacket or shawl — the Haram and the buses are heavily air-conditioned even when it is 40°C outside.
• Slippers you can slide off quickly, plus a cloth bag to carry them into the Haram.

For women

• Loose abayas in a breathable fabric — more than you think, because laundry time is limited.
• Scarves that stay put without pins where possible.
• Comfortable, closed, easily removable footwear.
• Any personal items you prefer a specific brand of — assume you will not find your brand there.

Documents pouch

One pouch, carried on your person, containing: passport, visa printout, ticket, vaccination certificate, insurance details, hotel details, your group leader's number, and photocopies of all of it. Photograph every document and email it to yourself before you leave home.

Medicines and toiletries

• All regular prescription medicines in original packaging, with enough for the full trip plus several spare days, and a doctor's prescription or letter.
• Basic remedies for headache, cold, stomach upset and blisters.
• Unscented soap and shampoo for use during ihram — this is the item most often forgotten.
• Lip balm and moisturiser. The air is very dry.
• Plasters for blisters, which are near-universal.

Electronics and power

Saudi sockets take the three-pin type used in the UK; carry an adapter. A power bank matters more than you expect, because your phone is your map, your group chat and your camera all day. A short multi-socket extension turns one hotel socket into four for a family room.

Food from home

Some dry snacks from home make the first two days easier, especially for children and for elderly travellers who eat lightly. Do not carry anything perishable, and check what your airline permits.

What not to pack

• Perfumed soap, deodorant, cream or wipes for use during ihram.
• Heavy formal clothing you will not wear.
• Large quantities of cash. Carry a sensible amount and a card.
• Anything valuable you would be distressed to lose in a crowd.
• More than one large suitcase per adult, whatever the allowance says.

Packing for children

A small backpack each with their own water bottle, a hat, snacks and one quiet thing to do makes long waits survivable. Write your phone number on a card in each child's pocket and photograph what they are wearing each morning.
