Hajj packing list

Hajj is longer, hotter and far more physical than Umrah. Pack for the walking and the days in Mina, not for the photographs.

A prayer mat with tasbih beads

The essentials

  • Two sets of ihram for men, plus a belt with a pocket.
  • Loose, breathable clothing for outside ihram — more than you think, because laundry time in Mina is not a realistic plan.
  • Unscented soap, shampoo and toothpaste for use in ihram.
  • Comfortable footwear you can remove quickly, and a cloth bag to carry it.
  • A light mat or sheet and a small inflatable pillow for the days in Mina and Muzdalifah.
  • A refillable water bottle.

Health

  • All prescription medicines in original packaging with a doctor's letter, enough for the whole journey plus spare days.
  • Blister plasters, oral rehydration salts, painkillers, and anything you personally rely on.
  • A small first-aid kit for the group if you are travelling as a family.
  • Sun protection: a light umbrella is used by pilgrims for shade and is worth carrying.

Documents

One pouch on your person: passport, visa, ticket, vaccination certificate, insurance, hotel details, your group leader's number, and photocopies of everything. Photograph all of it and email it to yourself before leaving India.

What not to carry

  • Perfumed products of any kind for use during ihram.
  • Large amounts of cash.
  • A suitcase you cannot lift yourself.
  • Valuables you would be distressed to lose in a crowd.

Our pre-departure webinar walks through the packing list live and answers the questions families always have about medicines, mobility and travelling with elderly parents. See the webinar schedule →
